Oral Practice - Picture 8 (Group Work)
This picture depicts a scene of a wet market. There are a lot of people. There are two stalls. One of the stalls is selling seafood, while the other is selling meats. A fishmonger is weighing a fish on the weighing scale. I think he is weighing it for the woman next to him. Next to him, a woman is holding some money. I think she is paying for the fish. Not far from her, a boy is trying to touch the crabs. A woman is holding back his hand and telling him not to touch it as he might injure himself. Perhaps, the woman is the boy’s mother. Beside them, a man is stealing a purse. I think he is a pickpocket. If I were the lady, I would be more alert. Not far from him, a lady is pointing to a piece of meat. The butcher is using a chopper, chopping the meat for the lady. In conclusion, the people in the market should take more care of their belongings.

In front of the store, there is a boy and his mother. The boy is trying to touch the crabs with his bare hands. If I were his mother, I would not let him touch anything. Beside them, there is a stall selling meat. The butcher is serving one of his customers. Not far away from the butcher, there is a pickpocket taking the lady’s purse. The pickpocket must be very daring to steal a lady’s purse in such a crowded wet market. In my opinion, this is a crowded and unhygienic wet market as the store holders should wear protective gloves. This picture depicts the scene of a wet market. There are many people there. I think it is a Sunday morning. There is a lady buying a fish from the fishmonger. She is holding some dollar notes. In front of her, there is a fishmonger weighing a fish. I think he is weighing it to determine its selling price. A boy is trying to touch a crab. There is a woman, whom I think is the boy’s mother. She is stopping him from touching the crab as one of the pincers might injure him. Behind the lady, a pickpocket is reaching into another lady’s basket, trying to take a purse from a her basket. In my opinion, the lady would be very shocked to find that her wallet missing when she wants to pay for the meat. If I were the lady, I would keep my wallet in a safe place. The butcher is chopping the meat with a chopper. In conclusion, the wet market sells fresher food than at the supermarket.

This picture depicts a scene at a wet market. There are a lot of people here. In my opinion, I think it is either Saturday or Sunday. Many people come here to buy food. There are two stalls selling fish and meats. There are prawns, fish and crabs sold there. There is a fishmonger weighing a fish on a weighing scale. Next to him, there is a woman holding two ten-dollar notes. I think she is trying to pay the fish he is weighing. Not far from them, there is a butcher and an old woman is buying meat. The butcher is chopping some pieces of meats on a chopping board. The woman is pointing at a piece of meat. In my opinion, I think she is telling which piece of meat she prefers. Behind her, there is a pickpocket taking a purse from the old woman's bag. The pickpocket is wearing earrings and I think he a gay. In my conclusion, the pickpocket should not do that as he can be put behind bars. Next to him, there is a little boy and a woman, probably his mother, at the fish stall. If I were the boy, I will not touch the crabs as it will snip my finger. Fortunately, the boy is being stopped by the mother. In my opinion, he is being scolded for touching the crab and he looked frightened when being scolded.

This is a scene of a wet market. It is very crowded. I think it should be a weekend. There is a lady buying some meat from the friendly old butcher. She seems unaware that there is a pick-pocket behind her, stealing her purse from her rattan basket. I think elderly people should be more alert and observant. I think he should not do that illegal act too as he could go to jail and only will get himself into danger. Not far from them, there is a woman and a little boy by her side. I think he is her son or nephew. She is using her left hand to grab the boy’s right hand. I think she is preventing him from getting hurt. Also, I think she is warning him not to get too near the live crabs as they might use their pincers on him. The fishmonger in front of them is weighing a fish. I think he is weighing it for the lady next to him. There are two-dollar notes in her right hand. I think she is going to use them to buy the fresh fish. In conclusion, I think everyone should be careful of pick pockets especially in crowded places and also, I think this is a good market that sells fresh and uncontaminated raw food.

Oral Practice - Picture 7 (Group Work)
This is a scene of a hawker centre. I think it is a weekend as there are a lot of people there. There is a stall selling Chicken Rice. Next to it is a stall selling Noodles. In front of the stall selling Chicken Rice, a family of three is eating their food. A boy from the family is feeding food to a stray cat. I think he is very inconsiderate as he might dirty the floor. A couple is shocked to see the boy's behavior. A man is walking towards the family of three. I think he is the father of the family. Not far from him, there is a woman enjoying her meal. Three men are looking at her angrily as they do not have any place to sit. If I were the woman, I would put the bags on the floor. In conclusion, we should not feed the animals that come by the hawker centre.
(Blue Group)
This picture depicts a scene of a hawker centre. There is a large variety of stores at the hawker centre. There is a chicken rice store and I think the hawker is chopping chicken for someone who had ordered from his stall. In front of the chicken rice stall, there is a man carrying two glasses of soft drinks on a tray. There is probably another thirst-quenching drinks stall in the hawker centre. Beside the chicken rice stall, there is a noodles stall. I think the hawker is boiling some noodles for her customers. Near the stall, there is a lady probably eating chicken rice and she puts all her shopping bags on the stools. There is a group of men glaring at her angrily and they are probably thinking how inconsiderate she is as she could have just taken one seat instead of four. If I were the lady, I would put my bags onto the floor. Beside them, there is a family eating joyfully. Within the family, there is a boy feeding food to a stray cat. I think he should not do that as the food is not suitable for cats. The other two people are probably his sister and mother. If I were his mother, I would scold him in front of everyone. (<--Why?) Not far away from them, there is a young couple staring at the inconsiderate mother(<-- ?) and son. They look disgusted. In my opinion, the boy should not feed the food to the stray cat. If I were the on-lookers, I will tell the boy that he cannot feed the stray cat. In conclusion, this is a popular but unhygienic hawker centre.

This picture depicts a scene of a food court. It is very crowded there. One of the stall is selling chicken rice and the other stall is selling noodles. There are three men who are waiting to have a seat on the stools. They seem to look at the lady at the first table angrily. I think that they are office staffs as they are wearing ties. As you can see, the lady put her plastic bags on three stools where people can have a seat. In my opinion, she should not put her plastic bags on the three stools as it is very inconsiderate. She should put them on the floor. Not far away from her, there is a family of four there. I think that the man behind them is the father of the two children. The little boy is feeding a stray cat some fish. In my opinion, he should not do so because he might attract insects and will dirty the floor. There is a couple staring at him. In my opinion, they are probably disgusted by the boy’s action. In conclusion, the food court is a very convenient place to have meals.
(Yellow Group)
This picture depicts a scene of a hawker centre. The man selling chicken rice is chopping the chicken and the woman selling noodles is boiling noodle. There are many people in this hawker centre. In my opinion, this must be lunch time. There is a family at a table. The family look like they are enjoying their dishes. Perhaps the woman is their mother. In my opinion, the boy throwing food down to the cat is very inconsiderate as by doing that, he is making the floor more dirty and attracting more crows, flies and cockroaches. There is a couple who are looking at the boy unhappily. The man who is carrying two cups of drinks and walking towards them might be the father of the family. At the next table, there is a woman eating a plate of chicken rice happily. I think she might have just finished shopping and had bought a lots of items. I think she should not put the items on the chairs as it prevents others from having a place to consume their meals. There are three men who look annoyed. I think they are annoyed because of the woman's action. I like going to a hawker centre as there are many choices of food to choose from. In conclusion, this is a very popular and clean hawker center.
(White Group)
This is a scene of a hawker centre. I think this is a popular one as there are many people having their meals. There is a family of a mother, a son and a daughter. The daughter is having a plate of rice, the mother is having plate of noodles and the son is also having a plate of rice. The son is feeding a stray cat a fish bone and some grains of rice. I think he is very inconsiderate as doing this act will only dirty the place. Behind that family, there is a man carrying a tray of two glasses of drinks. I think he is the father of the family. Next to him, there is a couple looking for a seat. The woman looks a little wary. I think she is scared of the stray cat. Behind them, there is a chicken rice stall. A butcher is chopping a chicken. I think he is the boss of the stall. The neighboring stall is a stall that sells noodles. I think the lady cooking the noodles is the lady boss. In front of the noodle stall, there are three men standing next to the table in front of them. I think they are staffs of some company nearby as they are wearing ties and are in formal wear. They are looking at the lady eating her plate of rice with stern looks. I think they are angry with the lady as she is taking up almost all the seats with her belongings. It is also very inconsiderate of her. Other people might not have a place to consume their meals.
In conclusion, I think everyone should learn to be more considerate in the public and everywhere else. Also, I think a hawker centre should be a place where one can enjoy delicious food with his family and friends. The food sold in here should be quite tender as many people come to have their meals.
Oral Practice - Picture 5
This is a scene of a park.
There are many people enjoying themselves there.
There is a boy riding a bicycle.
In front of him, there is a boy flying a kite.
I think it is a windy day.
Not far from him, there are two boys rollerblading on the walking path.
I think they are very inconsiderate.
Beside them, there is a group of boys playing ball.
I think they are playing volleyball.
If I were the boys, I would move to somewhere else and play.
A boy behind them had fallen down.
If I were the boy, I would put on safety gears when rollerblading.
Not far from him, two boys are jogging.
Two old folks are resting on the benches.
In conclusion, the park is very popular as there are many people in the park.
It is definitely a good place to be in the morning!
(Blue)
This is a scene of a beautiful and clean park.
The park looks very crowded.
There are two persons running on the track.
They seem to be challenging each other.
Beside them, there are two elderly folks seating on the different benches.
One of them, an old lady, is carrying her precious puppy.
The other, an old man, is sitting on the bench.
Not far from them, there are three boys playing volleyball.
The three boys should not play near the running track,
or they might hit the ball onto anybody who are there.
They look very happy.
Behind them, there are two boys rollerblading on the running track.
I think they are on the wrong track.
Behind the two boys, there is another boy flying his kite.
In conclusion, they are having a great time at the park.
(Red)
This is a scene of a park. There are many people there. It is probably a windy and cooling day as there are many people there. There is even a boy flying a kite. I think he picked this day to fly the kite, as the kite can fly higher than other days. Not far away from him, a boy is riding his bicycle. He seems calm and happy to me. A few steps away from him, there are two boys rollerblading. Another boy fell down while rollerblading. In my opinion, the boy should put on the safety gears when rollerblading. It will be much safer. Beside him, three boys are playing volleyball. They look like they are having a great time. In my opinion, the boys should not have played in front of the old folks because the ball might accidently injure the old folks. Behind them, a lady is stretching. I think she is about to go for a jog. There are two old folks sitting on the bench. The old man is resting on the bench while the old woman is petting her pet dog. In front of them, two men are jogging happily. The park is a good place to de-stress ourselves and to have fun!
(Yellow)
This is a scene of a park. There are many people in the park. In my opinion, this must be either a Saturday or Sunday. There are people flying kites. It is probably a windy day. There are also people rollerblading, jogging and resting. There are three boys roller blading on the jogging track. I think it is not right as the jogging track is for people to jog. One of them has just fallen down. If I were one of them, I will put on safety gears. There are a few benches. An old woman and an old man are sitting on the benches. The old woman is comforting her dog. In my opinion, she probably loves her dog dearly. Not far away from the old folks, there are a few boys playing volleyball. I think it is dangerous as the ball might hit the old folks. If I were one of them, I will go to another place to play. In conclusion, this is a very popular park.
(White)
This is a scene of a crowded, beautiful and popular park. There are many people enjoying themselves. There is a young boy cycling on his bike on the cycling path. He is riding a two-wheeled mini bike. Not far away from the young boy, there is another boy. I think he is a little older than the other boy. The older boy is flying a diamond-shaped kite. I think the wind is quite strong as the kite is flying quite high. Another two teenagers are rollerblading, wearing their safety gears. I think they are enjoying themselves. There are two old folks sitting on the benches. I think the old man is resting after a leisure walk while the old lady is patting her pet dog after a walk. Beside the old lady there is a young girl doing her warm-ups. Perhaps, she is going to jog later.
Not far from the girl, there are two boys jogging at the jogging track. I think they are having fun. Beside one of the boys, there is a group of boys playing with a ball. If I were one of them, I would ask them to play somewhere else before they hit someone accidentally. Behind one of the boys, there is another boy who had slipped and fell while roller-skating. Not far from the boy, there is a boy riding his bicycle. In my opinion, I think he is enjoying himself.
In conclusion, this is an exciting and fun park for everyone!

This is a building on fire.I think someone played with matches that causes the building to be on fire.As you can see, there is a firefighter using a hose, trying to extinguish the fire. There are two boys trapped on the third floor.I think they are shouting for help.A firefighter is carrying a boy while climbing down the ladder. As you can see, the boy is unconscious. There is a big inflated mattress on the ground. There are two firefighters shouting at the two boys.I think they are asking the boys to jump down onto the inflated mattress. Not far from them, two policemen are stopping some people from getting too close to the fire.In conclusion, people should not play with matches to ensure everyone’s safety.

This is a scene of a building that caught fire. There are firefighters and policemen. The whole flat is encircled by a big group of onlookers making a commotion. There are tongues of raging fire sticking out of the flat. One of the firefighters is climbing down the ladder with a boy lying unconscious over his shoulder.I think he is trying to rescue one by one. There is a firefighter using a fire hose to put out the fire.As you can see, there is a crowd of worried on-lookers.Two policemen are trying to calm down the on-lookers and told them not to go near the burning building. There is a huge inflatable mattress and two firefighters standing beside it.I think the two firefighters are shouting to the victims on the third floor to jump down on the mattress. In my opinion, the fire was probably caused by a gas leakage. If I were the firefighters, I am truly proud of myself.
(Red Group)
This is a scene of a building that has caught fire. I think the reason why it is caught on fire is because someone was playing with matchsticks. There is a tremendous amount of smoke coming from the building. There is a fireman trying to put out the fire with a water hose. There are some firemen and policemen. One of the firemen is carrying an unconscious boy down to the ground by using a ladder. In my opinion, that boy is unconscious due to the black smoke and the lack of oxygen. There are two firemen on each side of the mattress, trying to encourage the two remaining persons on the third floor to jump down onto the mattress. Below them, there is a group of on-lookers who are looking at them with horrified eyes. Possibly, they are the people who managed to escape from the building. I think that during the situation like this, one has to remain calm and not to panic. If not, you will not be able to follow the instructions given by the fireman or the police.

This is a scene of a building on fire. There are many people involved in it. Fire is raging out from the third and fourth storey. There is a firefighter trying to extinguish the fire with a water hose. That firefighter is on a ladder connected to the fire engine. I think it is very brave of him as he able to face the fire. There is another firefighter carrying an unconscious resident down the ladder with another firefighter holding on to it. I think that resident has inhaled to much smoke. There are two boys trapped on the third storey. They are shouting for help. I think the two firefighters below on the ground storey are calling them to jump off the building and land on the inflated bed below. There is a group of neighbourhood residents clustering below to see what has happened. Some of them are gasping in shock and some others are pointing at the people involved. Two policemen are trying to refrain them from entering the danger zone and not to panic. In conclusion, we should not play with fire as it can endanger lives and cause death. (Green Group)

Some simple guides for Picture Discussion
Some guidelines for your reference:
When you are given a picture, remember to do the following:
DESCRIBE – this is the first stage of Picture Description.
Describe in general what you see.
1) Describe the scene. For example, start by saying:
"This is a scene of a bedroom."
"This picture shows the scene of a bedroom."
" This picture depicts the scene of a bedroom."
2) Describe the number of people in the scene, their gender and their ages.
For example: "There are two children here. One is a boy while the other is a girl. The boy seems to be in his early teens while the girl is perhaps 7 years old."
3) Describe what the people are doing, what they are wearing and their emotions.
For example: "The boy is wearing a striped T-shirt and a pair of shorts. He is trying to study. He looks rather irritated."
INTERPRET - once you have finished describing the picture, it is time to start interpreting it.
1) Provide the moral of the story. For example: "The girl should be more considerate of her brother's feelings. She should not play with her toys while he is trying to study. Instead, she should go to the living room to play."
2) Give your opinion.
For example: "In my opinion, the girl is truly inconsiderate. Her brother should even tell her off."
3) Put yourself in the picture. For example: "If I were the boy, I would firmly tell my sister to play somewhere else."
Other Tips
- Use present tense throughout the description.

Oral Picture Discussion - Picture 4
Dear all,
Thanks for the hard work! I have compiled your work below. :)
This is a scene of an accident.
A van and a car have collided into each other and that causes a traffic jam at a traffic junction. I think one of the drivers drive recklessly.
There are bits and pieces of shattered glass on the road.
The driver of the van is severely injured.
Maybe a piece of glass has cut the van driver's hand that causes it to bleed.
The driver of the car is stuck in his seat.
Two men are helping to free him.
In my opinion, they are very helpful and brave.
Not far from the scene, a boy is calling for help at the telephone booth.
I think he is calling for the ambulance.
There are two groups of passers-by standing aside looking at the accident.
If I were one of the passers-by, I would go and help the drivers.
In conclusion, all drivers should drive carefully and be alert at all times on the road. This will ensure their personal safety and also the safety of others.

The fronts of the van and the car are badly damaged and the glasses of the windscreen are shattered into pieces. The driver of the van has a deep cut on his arm and he is slightly injured. I think the shattered glass caused the deep cut on his arm. Not far from the scene, two men are trying to help the man in his seat to get out. I think that they are brave as the car may explode anytime. Not far from there, there are a group of on-lookers looking at the vehicles shockingly. Beside them, there is a man at the telephone booth, pointing at the scene. Possibly, he is calling for the police and the ambulance. If I were the drivers, I would not drive recklessly. In conclusion, all drivers should stay alert at all time when they are on the road. This will ensure the safety of others and themselves.

This is a scene of a road accident between a car and van. A car and a van have just collided into each other, causing a massive traffic jam. Two groups of curious on-lookers are crowding around the accident and causing a commotion. Pieces of shattered glass from the two vehicles are scattered all around the road. The bonnets of the two vehicles are badly damaged. This is probably due to the impact of the accident. The driver of the van has a cut on his arm and is bleeding profusely due to the shattered glass. The driver of the car is trapped in his seat. I think he could not react in time to remove his seat belt when the accident happened. There are two helpful men who came to help the car driver. In my opinion, they are brave as the car may explode any time. If I were an on-looker, I would probably keep a safe distance from the accident. It is not safe to be near the badly damaged vehicles. Not far away, there is a boy using the public phone. I think he is calling the ambulance for help. In conclusion, all drivers should not drive recklessly and should slow down when approaching traffic junctions.
